What Spirit Of Mumbai?

The city received welcome monsoon showers last Saturday. But all the cheer of monsoon arriving before time lasted short, as the clouds had a rather shady agenda of their own. Rarely are opening showers so heavy. And like year after year, the city, especially the hallowed BMC was taken by surprise. It's a wonder how the start of monsoon always takes the BMC by surprise.

The Spirit of Mumbai

Mumbai and monsoons share a very puzzling relation. The average Mumbaikar beaten down by the summer heat, eagerly awaits its arrival. They also welcome its arrival by having fun in the first rains, to heading out to hill stations as soon as the first rains arrive. But this festive spirit is short lived, as the early light showers give way to heavy downpour, the citizens can be seen wearing a weary look. As an implied rule goes, Mumbai has to be brought to halt by heavy rains at least once every monsoon. Even after pumping in crores of funds and putting in years of efforts the solution to the problem of flooding seems far-fetched.

Some want to reach the pinnacle of stardom; flashlights are what they dream of; while some dream of making the city a better place for everyone who calls it home.

Mumbai is a city of contrasts, from high rise towers to sprawling slums, from imported cars to hand drawn carts, from five star restaurants to the humble vada pav stall. This contrasting nature of the city has always attracted creative minds. Be it Bollywood, painters, writers and poets, the city has inspired all to create works of art about it. Many people have tried to capture the spirit of the city in their words, poems, photographs and movies. The maximum city has the potential to inspire all!

Discovering Mumbai also seeks to understand the thing they call ‘spirit of Mumbai’, which is credited to making Mumbai so very much different from other cities.
